| Profane Songs. The profane repertory includes ballads, serenades, funny songs and it is sung at festivals and while working, during the various seasonal phases of the different agricultural activities. It includes pieces typically from Ceriana and from the western regions of Liguria and songs from other northern parts, songs of ancient times and of recent ones too. The songs in Ceriana were always born from everyday life situations and are linked to real people, proper places and facts which really happened. The themes depict vivacious plots of family and village life, the wish of revenge of the betrayed lover, love and lovers` stories, the taste for gossip, arguments on inheritance, arranged and unhappy marriages, the goodbyes of soldiers to their beloved, the unwelcome advice from a mother to her young daughter, a lovers`dreams. The profane repertory reminds us sometimes of the past links that western Liguria had to France, which with her kings and the kings` sons is often present in our ballads.
